In 1916, before Sargent finished the last panels of the Library murals, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston commissioned him to design ceiling decorations for its rotunda. The Museum’s trustees were so pleased with the results that they asked him to extend his murals over the stairway as well. At the same time, in 1921, Harvard president Abbott Lawrence Lowell commissioned Sargent to paint two panels at Widener Library, commemorating the victims of the Great War. These were unveiled in 1922.
