The Museum’s trustees, pleased with the success of the rotunda murals, invited Sargent to expand his work into the spaces around the grand staircase. Sargent again requested elaborate architectural changes: he asked that the columns flanking the stairwell be moved, and part of the skylight covered. He made twelve paintings and six reliefs for the new project, which took him four years to complete. The new murals were unveiled a few months after his death in 1925.
