Fall of Gog and Magog, detail

Sargent’s working method

The conservators IR study contributed to a richer understanding of Sargent’s working technique. The study revealed that Sargent did not draw every element of his composition before starting to paint. In fact, he did not complete any comprehensive underdrawings in a carbon-based material for any of the murals. His underdrawings appeared to serve mainly as guides for particular details such as geometric objects or patterns and symbols borrowed from ancient art sources.
