Pagan Gods, detail of Serpent

Replacement of lost “jewels”

A few glass pieces were missing from the Astarte mural. Archival photographs from the original installation of the mural showed the style and location of the missing jewels; empty nail holes in the murals confirmed these locations. To replace these missing details, the conservators took silicone putty molds from existing jewels and cast new jewels in epoxy from the molds. They varnished the new jewels to adjust the gloss, mounted them in brass bezels fabricated by a jeweler, and re-nailed them onto the mural.
