Surface cleaning of Lincrusta-Walton

The Lincrusta-Walton elements that Sargent applied throughout the Triumph of Religion murals also needed a thorough surface cleaning. The Lincrusta pieces were found to be securely attached to the wall: the original glue-paste lining adhesive combined with small nails around the perimeter of each piece remained stable. Conservators cleaned the Lincrusta surfaces by applying an aqueous cleaning solution. To recover the shimmering effects of the gilded surfaces, the undulating texture of the Lincrusta was best cleaned using brushes and tiny cotton swabs to remove dirt and grime collected in the recesses.
