Carved wood elements

In the mural Pagan Gods, installed in 1895, Sargent created a startling effect around the image of Moloch by nailing fifty carved and gilded wood hands to the painted canvas surface. He also used wood reliefs on another mural, Madonna of Sorrows, installed in 1916. In the later painting, he carved and gilded each candle flame and nailed them to the mural.
