Treatment of plaster reliefs

Conservators stabilized plaster cracks using Acryloid® B-72, an acrylic resin adhesive, fed into the cracks to strengthen the surrounding area and prevent further cracking. To reinforce these repairs, conservators backed these plaster elements with polyester-rayon gauze adhered with B-72. Where losses on the front of the plaster were visually disfiguring, they sealed the edges of the losses with B-72, applied a commercial vinyl spackling material, and painted the fill to match the surrounding area.
