Reworking earlier paintings (continued)

In 1903, the south wall murals were installed opposite the north wall portion of Frieze of Prophets. Sargent’s new murals included ornate reliefs and an imposing, gilded crucifix. To balance the impact of the richly decorated south wall, Sargent gilded the tan background of the north wall portion of the frieze, adding gold leaf to the canvas.
