The wax-oil cleaning formula that restorers applied in 1953 also rendered paint surfaces more vulnerable to environmental conditions. Wax residue from this cleaning formula caused the surfaces to attract and retain grime easily. With age, the wax-oil residue has also darkened considerably, further altering the original color and tonality of the murals.
