Messianic Era, detail

Cleaning process

The conservators cleaned the murals using a two-step process. First, they cleaned the wax and grime from the murals’ surface using mineral spirits, having chosen this solvent for its ability to remove wax and oily dirt while leaving the paint film unharmed. They dipped hand-rolled cotton swabs in the solvent and rolled them over the paint surface, dissolving the wax and soil, which were absorbed into the cotton.
