conservators cleaning Messianic Era

Treatment decisions

Sargent may have applied the coating —which has darkened considerably since 1916— to reduce glare on the surfaces of certain murals or perhaps to tone them slightly. The 2003 conservators faced a dilemma: how would they retain this original coating while reducing the murals’ darkened appearance? They decided to partially remove the coating during cleaning. To preserve Sargent’s final touches on the surface, they carefully avoided those places where he had painted on top of the coating.
