Study of East Hall Decoration

East wall (continued)

In 1915, Sargent wrote to Library officials, describing changes in his east wall design. This oil study provides an illustration of his revision. In order to enhance the visibility of the painting in the relatively narrow hall, Sargent proposed that Sermon on the Mount, the cycle’s keynote image, would occupy only the central panel of the east wall.
