Israel and the Law (continued)

In contrast to conventional representations of this scene, Sargent chose to conceal God’s face. When someone asked why, the artist apparently replied humorously that he no longer did portraits. While we cannot see God’s features or expression, one particularly intimate passage in the lunette reveals the toes of God’s left foot, shown in close proximity to the toes of the child Israel, which tuck comfortably under the Almighty’s garment.
