Israel and the Law, detail

Israel and the Law (continued)

In the Library hall, Sargent moved his image of Moses with the tablets of stone to the north wall at the center of Frieze of Prophets. In this lunette, on the east wall, the recipient of the law is not Moses but the child Israel, and the action is not the solemn handing over of stone tablets, but rather an intimate moment in which God teaches the child from a scroll. The picture might thus have been called “Israel Learning the Law.”
