Mysteries of the Rosary, details showing Eve and Adam

Mysteries of the Rosary:
Adam and Eve, Mary and Christ

Contiguous with Handmaid of the Lord, and just where the vault begins to spring from the wall, Sargent painted Eve (unregenerate woman) and Mary as Mother of God (spiritually perfected woman). Across the south end of the room and contiguous with Madonna of Sorrows, he placed a similarly arranged Adam (unregenerate man) and Jesus as the Good Shepherd (spiritually perfected man). This pairing of Eve with Mary as a kind of second Eve, and Adam with Christ as a kind of second Adam reiterated a common medieval Christian convention.
