Taharka, or Tirhakah, conquering the Assyrians In addition to borrowing from the Egyptian art he saw for his depiction of Pharaoh, Sargent refined his visual idea by studying illustrations in books such as Sir John Gardner Wilkinson’s classic Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians (1837), a popular text he knew from boyhood, and which had been republished in 1883.
