Crucifix, detail of the head of Christ

Crucifix Construction (continued)

Sargent painted the plaster surface with thin washes of red and brown paint for the drapery and flesh. He used both gold paint and gold foil to highlight the cross, and applied a silver-colored metal foil over the snake. Christ’s halo is made of sheet metal stamped with a pattern of raised circles and rectangles. Although the metal has since rusted, Sargent probably intended the raised patterns to shine brightly against a nonreflective background. He applied zigzags of black-colored paint or oil stick to shade the background.
