Six-winged Seraph, and Synagogue, detail Sargent depicted here in minute detail an elaborate six-winged angel called a seraph, with a tiny face and patterned wings like a butterfly or a bird’s. He added color notes at the lower left. Sargent used this image in the panel Synagogue, where the seraph decorates the drapery around the figure.
