Frieze of Prophets, east wall Triumph of Religion narrates a story. The artist takes us from materialist superstition in Pagan Gods on the north ceiling vault, through fossilized dogma or creed in the medievalizing images on the south wall, to a “modern” spirituality of the heart. For Sargent, this most advanced stage emerged first in the Hebrew prophets and reached its distilled expression in Sermon on the Mount, a scene he intended to paint but never executed. Note the figures in the east wall panel of Frieze of Prophets who point toward the vacant central space reserved for Sermon on the Mount.
