Israelites Oppressed, detail of inscription from Psalm 106 Sargent sometimes incorporated textual references into his design. For example, a passage from Psalm 106 appears around Israelites Oppressed. The passage describes the inconstancy of God’s chosen people and God’s generosity toward them in spite of their straying. By adding lines of text to the visual context of the mural, Sargent made it “speak” an idea central to ancient Judaic thought.
