Study of scales for Judgment, detail of Judgment In creating the murals, Sargent paid close attention to even the tiniest details. This drawing is one of many sketches focusing on the decorative hooks from which the pans on a scale are hung. An angel holds the scale, used to weigh the merits of the dead, in the lunette Judgment. Meticulous sketches such as this are characteristic of Sargent’s preparatory work.
