Frieze of Prophets, detail of Ezekiel, and Coventry Patmore The prophet Ezekiel, shown in profile as an elderly man robed and hooded in white, is based on a portrait sketch in oils that Sargent did of the English poet Coventry Patmore in 1894. Having already painted Patmore in a formal half-length portrait (National Portrait Gallery, London), Sargent knew well his aging face, framed in white hair.
