Sketches of Crucifix, and Crucifix


Sargent first put his ideas for Crucifix on paper. Looking at these sketches now, we can see how his design evolved from a more conventional image of a solitary Christ on the cross to one that includes the figures of Adam and Eve. In the early sketch shown here, Adam and Eve do not appear, although the figure of Christ looks much as he does in the Library sculpture. In the smaller drawing on the right, Sargent seems mainly concerned with working out the details for the form of the cross.
