Cleaning Dogma of the Redemption

Cleaning of papier-mâché

In contrast to the plaster relief elements on the north end of the Hall, Sargent applied three-dimensional papier-mâché elements on the south end panels, such as Dogma of the Redemption, and the vault, Mysteries of the Rosary. Many of the delicate paper surfaces appeared to be toned with a sensitive water-based medium, and therefore required a dry cleaning method. Conservators first dusted with a brush and vacuum, followed by wiping with vulcanized rubber sponges. Less sensitive gilded and painted papier-mâché surfaces were cleaned with a mild aqueous solution.
