Messianic Era, detail

Discoloration of old retouching

Previous restorers had applied retouching to areas of the murals that showed damage or loss of paint. The retouching had darkened in many cases, or was a poor match for Sargent’s original colors. The current conservators removed this disfiguring retouching, revealing the old losses. These losses were inpainted to integrate them into the composition. This detail from Messianic Era shows the progression from poor retouching, through removal, to corrective inpainting.
