Metal relief elements

Sargent introduced metal to his repertoire of relief materials when he fashioned Christ’s halo during the 1903 installation of Crucifix. By 1916, with the installation of Madonna of Sorrows, the artist had become more ambitious with his use of metal relief elements. Seven metal swords, each representing one of the Sorrows the Madonna suffered, pierce her heart.
