Varnish

After cleaning wax and grime from the murals, conservators sought to protect the exposed paint surfaces by applying a new surface coating as a barrier. This coating would also protect the sensitive paint during future cleanings. Since Sargent never intended his paintings to look varnished, the new coating material would have to provide protection without increasing the surface gloss of the murals.
The conservators, joined by an advisory committee of conservation experts and Sargent scholars, gathered to discuss the issue of coating the murals (2003 photo)
