Israelites Oppressed, detail of Pharoah plaster reliefs

Relief elements

In all four stages of installation, Sargent decorated his painted canvases with three-dimensional, or relief, elements, experimenting with many kinds of materials. Most of the murals show the artist’s use of a variety of low-relief additions, made of plaster, carved wood, glass, Lincrusta-Walton, metal, and papier-mâché. These low reliefs animate the paintings by enhancing forms and reflecting light in ways not possible with a traditional painted canvas.
