Synagogue, 1924, with glare

1930s situation

Sargent’s lighting scheme remained in place until well after his death in 1925. By the mid-1930s visitors to the Hall began to express dissatisfaction with the lighting scheme. Many found that the wall sconces provided inadequate light for viewing the murals and created glare.
