Sargent in his studio, ca. 1894

Marouflage technique (continued)

Marouflage allows artists to paint in the comfort of their studios without climbing scaffolding to reach ceilings or walls. Sargent worked on the Triumph of Religion murals in his studios in England. This photograph depicts Sargent painting Pagan Gods on a temporary arch support. Note also the lunette Israelites Oppressed, which is visible in the background. Once Sargent painted the murals, they were rolled and shipped across the Atlantic. After the murals were installed, Sargent made final adjustments to the images.
