Painting technique (continued)
By the second phase of the murals’ installation, in 1903, Sargent’s materials and techniques had changed radically. Instead of using glossy, saturated paint, he chose matte paint, creating a flatter, more stylized look for the figures. A comparison of the angel shown at left with the earlier figure of the prophet Isaiah demonstrates this marked change in Sargent’s technique.
