Painting technique (continued)By the second phase of the murals’ installation, in 1903, Sargent’s materials and techniques had changed radically. Instead of using glossy, saturated paint, he chose matte paint, creating a flatter, more stylized look for the figures. A comparison of the angel shown at left with the earlier figure of the prophet Isaiah demonstrates this marked change in Sargent’s technique. |
