Crucifix, detail of Adam showing dust

Conditions in the 1940s

The Library’s urban location, close to a railroad yard, meant that large amounts of dust and soot entered the building. Heavy accumulations of both darkened the murals, which soon required cleaning. An initial overall restoration to clean the murals occurred around 1940, but no documentation of the restorers’ work exists.
