Restoration of ceiling pendentives

During the restoration of the decorative paint scheme, conservators discovered that the 1953 repainting of the triangular shaped pendentives did not accurately follow the original paint design. Careful examination of archival photographs revealed that these surfaces were originally decorated with a sponged paint technique. From the floor below the sponged texture mimicked the surface of variegated stone. Conservators confirmed the presence of this patterned surface by chemically removing the over-paint to expose the original surface in small selected areas.
