Marouflage technique

Sargent employed the marouflage technique for his murals at the Library. Unlike the fresco technique, which applies pigments mixed with water directly onto a wet lime plaster layer on the wall, marouflage is used to glue painted canvases to wall surfaces. This method was popular in mural painting at the turn of the 20th century.
