General condition

During the 2003 restoration, the conservators found the murals’ relief elements to be in generally good condition. Treatments focused on minor structural repairs and surface cleaning. The primary condition problems for these objects were related to their materials and construction, or to environmental conditions in Sargent Hall. Unlike the painted canvas surfaces, the relief elements were largely untouched by previous restorers. Conservators treated relief elements in situ where possible; some more extensive repairs required the reliefs to be removed from the murals for treatment.
