Ceiling medallions and decorations

Sargent’s commission went beyond the painted surfaces in the Special Collections Hall. He was also responsible for the organization of the space itself; for creating sculpted elements, decorative patterns and stenciling, ceiling medallions, and architectural decorations; and for providing lighting fixtures. The density of ornament and variety of media was unprecedented in Sargent’s work (and rare in contemporary mural programs). For his gilded relief ceiling medallions, the artist chose symbolic emblems from Jewish and Christian history and ritual practice.
