west wall lunettes: Heaven, Judgment, Hell

West wall lunettes

In 1916 Sargent installed the trios of lunettes across the top of the room’s west and east walls. Taken together the three lunettes on the west wall form a Last Judgment sequence. A deep blue sky as the background for each suggests that the three lunettes open on the same limitless space. In the central Judgment lunette, the Archangel Michael weighs souls in a scale, consigning them either to heaven or hell. Sargent placed the Hell lunette at the north end of the west wall, and Heaven at the south end of the west wall.
