Sargent designed the lighting of the room to emphasize his point that dogma represents the religious experience of the past, now shrouded in mystery. Thus he kept the two ends of the hall in semi-darkness, with reflected light picking up the exotic glint of gold here and there, suggesting that the past is only dimly visible to us.
