fragment of Church, Reims Cathedral A further connection between World War I and the Synagogue and Church pair existed for Sargent. He had turned to the cathedral at Reims as a source for this traditional iconography. During the war, the Reims cathedral suffered nearly constant bombardment. In 1918, while Sargent was at the front and also making final plans for his painting of Church, the sculpture of Church at the Reims cathedral was virtually demolished by enemy fire.
