Crucifix Construction

The Library sculpture is also made of cast plaster, the mold taken from a full-scale model made of clay (for the figures) and wood. Sargent cast the hands of the two-dimensional angels that “support” the crucifix in plaster as part of the leg of the cross, while he made the sleeves of their robes out of papier-mâché. The six scroll elements along the sides of the cross are also papier-mâché.
