Man in a Blue Mantle In creating the Frieze of Prophets, Sargent also drew inspiration from dramatic models that he had painted while traveling in North Africa in 1890–91. These renderings are portraits of “types” rather than individuals, and they celebrate the dark-skinned, exotic splendor that Sargent associated with the ancient Jewish prophets.
